Job Title: Tooling Metrologist I

Responsible for assisting the Supervisor and Lead in the fabrication and maintenance and inspection of high-quality tooling for the assembly and fabrication of aircraft parts following Piper Drawings, Process Specifications (PPS) and other manufacturing instructions. Assists in meeting or exceeding planned production and delivery schedules while maximizing company resources to achieve company goals.

Essential Job Functions:

Assist in the inspection, fabrication and assembly of weld fixtures, assembly drill jigs, holding fixtures, sub assembly fixtures, saw jigs, drill jigs, rivet jigs, and drill jigs according to engineering drawings and specifications.

Set up and operate portables CMMs (laser tracker, roamer arm)

Operate a laser tracker to build, modify, and validate accuracy of tooling details.

Set up and operate machine tools such as saw, jig, die, lathe, milling machine, and grinder to machine part and verify conformance of tooled part to specifications

Effectively communicate to fabricators, machinists, assemblers, engineers, and other parties as required.

Perform routine maintenance tasks on tools and equipment.

Maintain accurate records of tooling activities and materials usage.

Assist production with critical structural repairs and inspections for non-conforming parts/assemblies following instructions from engineering dispositions.

Assist engineers to collect data where large scale metrology data or reverse engineering is needed.

Provide assistance when required during new product development, design, build and testing. This may periodically involve augmenting Experimental Flight Test Department in a variety of capacities in order to achieve critical program milestones.

Inspect fabricated tools for quality and accuracy.

Able to assist teammates on machine set-up and calibrations

Learn to troubleshoot and diagnose tooling issues.

Maintain a clean and organized work area.

Follow safety protocols and guidelines at all times.

Maintain departmental compliance with Piper QAM/QIM, AS9100, and FAA requirements.

Adhere to Piper Drawings, Process Specifications (PPS) and other manufacturing instructions

Assist with maintaining effective Safety, Environmental Protection, FOD and Tool Control, 5S and other assigned programs.

Partner with senior teammates within career path to receive and share practical knowledge for proper training to perform necessary job functions and requirements in order to attain satisfactory levels of performance and production effectivity.

Strong mechanical aptitude

Ability to visualize 3D space and integrate complex geometries on to both large and small fabrications.

Good manual dexterity and attention to detail.

Strong work ethic and willingness to learn.

Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.

Ability to work scheduled shift and hours, including overtime

Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.

Job Title: Tooling Metrologist II

Responsible for assisting the Supervisor and Lead in the fabrication and maintenance and inspection of high-quality tooling for the assembly and fabrication of aircraft parts following Piper Drawings, Process Specifications (PPS) and other manufacturing instructions. Assists in meeting or exceeding planned production and delivery schedules while maximizing company resources to achieve company goals.

Essential Job Functions:

Inspect, fabricate and assemble most complex/intricate weld fixtures, assembly drill jigs, holding fixtures, sub assembly fixtures, saw jigs, drill jigs, rivet jigs, and drill jigs according to engineering drawings and specifications.

Set up and operate portable CMMs (Coordinate Measuring Machines) such as laser trackers, roamer arms, and scanners for metrology applications.

Ability to provide thorough, concise and understandable reports for both internal and external customers.

Discern how best to establish a reference system for the current task then apply it and install it both on and off the part

Collaborate with engineers and designers to develop and improve tool designs.

Troubleshoot and diagnose tooling issues, and implement corrective actions.

Inspect finished tools for quality and accuracy, and make necessary adjustments.

Assists as a technical liaison between other teammates and Piper’s Manufacturing Support Teams as well as vendors, equipment suppliers, etc. when appropriate.

Assists with developing continuous improvement efforts to enhance the team’s performance including schedule delivery performance, reduction of late work, elimination of quality defects & scrap, productivity improvement initiatives and cost reductions. Assists with data collection, review and report generation.

Assists in meeting or exceeding planned production and delivery schedules while maximizing company resources to achieve company goals.

Essential Job Functions:

Serves as lead with the ability to guide and willingness to receive and share practical knowledge, train, and mentor teammates within career path to perform necessary job functions and requirements in order to attain satisfactory levels of performance and production effectivity.

Adhere, maintain and assist teammates within career path to all departmental compliance requirements such as Safety, Environmental Protection, FOD and Tool Control, 5S and other assigned programs.

Inspect fabricate and assemble all complex/intricate weld fixtures, assembly drill jigs, holding fixtures, sub assembly fixtures, saw jigs, drill jigs, rivet jigs, and drill jigs according to engineering drawings and specifications.

Set up a tooling dock for the build of large assembly fixtures.

Lead tooling projects from concept to completion, including design, fabrication, and testing.

Stay abreast of industry trends and advancements in tooling technologies, and make recommendations for adoption.

Assists with developing continuous improvement efforts to enhance the team’s performance including schedule delivery performance, reduction of late work, elimination of quality defects & scrap, productivity improvement initiatives and cost reductions. Assists with data collection, review and report generation.

Minimum Position Qualifications

Export Control Compliance requirements (ITAR), therefore a "US Person" as defined by 22.C.F.R is preferred.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Related Tooling Metrology Experience Requirements:
    • Tooling Metrologist I: ≤ 3 years of experience
    • Tooling Metrologist II: 3 – 5 years of experience
    • Senior Tooling Metrologist: ≥ 5 years of experience
    • * Demonstrated verifiable competency through assignment of tasks and duties directly related to the position, confirming knowledge, skills and abilities in lieu of experience.
  • Experience using inspection equipment, such as, micrometers, gauge blocks, dial indicators, height gauges, optical comparators, and CMMs is preferred.

Physical Demands

Demonstrates physical and functional ability to perform and accomplish tasks. Ability to lift and carry up to 35 lbs.
